Picking Yourself Up After Having a Setback

Depression can cause you to have setbacks. Instead of giving up, start again.

Pick Yourself Up

Depression sucks! Just when you start to make some headway in your life, it will come along and knock you off you feet. This has been my problem as of late. A couple of months ago I was doing pretty good. I was exercising, meditating, and completing projects daily. Then, I got knocked off my feet, again. And, what sucks even more is every time I get knocked down, it's harder to get up the next time.

I guess part of the problem with getting back up is how I view my past "failings". When I'm trying to psych myself up to start again, thoughts will run through my head reminding me how many times I've failed to  stay the course. "Why bother?" the thoughts ask, "You're only going to fall down again!" Those kind of thoughts are (obviously) very demoralizing, but I tend to listen to them anyways. They speak to the part of me that believes that I am just not good enough.

It's occurred to me that a better way to look at the past would be to consider how many times I've gotten back up, instead of how many times I've fallen. Falling is so easy, trust me I know. But getting up again? Now that's a lot harder. Getting up again takes courage, it takes strength, it takes character. Instead of remembering how many times I've ended up in the dirt, I can think about how many times I've decided I'm not giving up. I can think about how many times I stood up, brushed the dirt off, and started back down the path; even knowing that I very well may fall again. Now that will make a girl feel inspired!

If you are in a place in your life right now where you are in the dirt, and you do not know if you have what it takes to succeed in life, I would like to encourage you to take courage. You may be hurting pretty badly; falling down can really hurt! But you wouldn't have made it this far on your journey if you didn't have the strength and courage inside of you that will allow you to start again. So take heart friend! Pick yourself up and try again!

"Failure is not falling down, but refusing to get up." _ Proverb

"Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up." _ Galatians 6:9 (NIV)
